Meaning - Gist
O Lord rAma - indweller of this tyAgarAja!

  • Is the empire (called Universe), where You are (said to be) the inner regulator of everyone (everything), indeed real?
  • It is surprising how the pure minded tolerated looking at these unregulated people.
  • Some do not know the right path; some became poverty stricken;
  • some being (or becoming) extreme egotists ended up as adherers of most despicable sects;
  • some became paramours of married women; some performed topsy-turvy tasks;
  • some became totally immersed in the Worldly Existence.

  • I do not understand what this game of deception is.

    some became (ainAru) paramours of married women (jArulu); moreover (adi gAka) (jArulainAradi),
    they performed (jEsedaru) topsy-turvy (tAru mAru) tasks (panula);
    some became (ainAru) totally immersed in the Worldly Existence (samsArulu) (samsArulainAru);
    O Indwelling (svAnta sadana) Lord of this tyAgarAja! I do not understand (teliya) what (EmO) this game of deception (kapaTamu) (kapaTamEmO) is;

    1kapaTamEmO – What is this game of deception? In this regard, the following verse from bRhadAraNyaka upanishad – IV.iii.22 is relevant –

    ananvAgataM puNyEnAnanvAgataM pApEna
    tIrNO hi tadA sarvAnchOkAnhRdaysya bhavati ||
    "In this state a father is no father, a mother no mother, worlds no worlds, the gods no gods, the Vedas no Vedas. In this state a thief is no thief, the killer of a noble brAhmaNa no killer, a cANDAla no cANDAla, a pulkasa no pulkasa, a monk no monk, a hermit no hermit. (This form of his) is untouched by good work and untouched by evil work, for he is then beyond all the woes of his heart (intellect)." (Translation by Swami Madhavananda)
